The Ageing Cottager

( Weeding Baking Knitting )

The squirrel skips past water-hyacinths
The butterfly from flower to flower flitting
From soil to intestine move the helminths
She spends her days weeding , baking and knitting

The butterfly from flower to flower flitting
Never confined even to sweet rose-minths
She spends her days weeding baking and knitting
Termites have hollowed out her cottage plinths

Never confined even to sweet rose-minths
Her loves range from wallflowers to cupcakes
Termites have hollowed out her cottage plinths
But in oblivion she knits, weeds and bakes

Her loves range from wallflowers to cupcakes
Flour mud and fibres line her fingernails
But in oblivion she knits weeds and bakes
Her sweater pockets floppy with lamb’s tails

Flour mud and fibres line her fingernails
From soil to intestine move the helminths
Her sweater pockets floppy with lamb’s tails
The squirrel skips past water-hyacinths.
