Looking Back: 1981

Do not be too surprised
If you cannot find
A bed of nails to sleep upon
If you cannot find
A yoga teacher or a wise one
Without American dollars
In his eyes
Or if you find
With bottled water,knapsack,
And tanned skin
Historical monuments
Turning contemporary
For the magic, you came to see,
Is in the legends of this land
In the silence of tales retold
And the meeting of great minds
And cultures within and without
And words which have passed
In times of war and peace
From mouth to mouth:
The princes have become recluses
The snake-charmers have a grouse
This country you came to see
Rests peaceful in tourist books.
