Dusk, Shadowy light engulfed the sky
They came scooping from north
a ragged , imprecise formation
in fives and tens and fifties,
a swarm of mammals
Piercing the grey sky, a flurry of arrows.
Tracing a dotted trajectory
air show of the bats
Took me by rapture,
a sight to behold
Their echolations reverberating
like whispers in chorus
Flying down south,
the formation thinning,
just the closer friends,
smaller groups
doting couples and then
A Lonely Bat
Tail pin of the last arrow,
straying behind the rest
A careful distance
within sight, within horizon,
as dusk gave away to
star littered night
Wonder why this lonely flight?
Lost in love or a fiery war?
Musing a grudge or carrying a pain?
Laden with guilt that is slowing the pace?
Or serving a chastisement over
A silly misdemeanour
Don’t worry, my friend
On a different dusk
I will see you again, aside your flock
The croon of your ballad
To your new found love,
Resonating the sky
As you flew down south
the formation thinning,
just the closer friends,
smaller groups
doting couples and then again
A Lonely Bat…..
A richly textured, acutely observed work that thoroughly engages the reader.
