Cockerel’s First Autumn’s Calling

I’ve just heard the autumn’s first cockerel callin’-
Even though it’s sleight of hand.
Them, the chimes of ma’ ol’ granddad’s clock vibratin’
The old forgotten patterned tiles
Lying lost, and all forlorn in
In the cold, dark, dampened hallway…
Here, now I stand this ‘ere
Heard the cockerel’s first autumn’s calling-
Now that winter’s frozen depths,
Does autumn’s cockerel’s call
Warn of winter’s impeding,
Winter’s harm,
Cockerel’s first autumn’s calling.
