Widows at Varanasi

They wait

at the ghats of Varanasi
their youth deprived
young bodies shorn of love
at a very tender age
before they learnt
the ways of love
They wait
for the holy fire
to touch them one day
with tongues of burning passion
to rouse
for one last time
before the flowing calm river
cools the singed soul.
