Today’s beacon of hope

Any forward-looking government

Which has a clear mandate to govern,

Undisturbed by coalition partners

Nor harassed by the opposition

Has a very good handful of women parliamentarians

Who show sheer grit, hard work and never say-die-spirit,

Will go a long way and reach its goals.

So many women politicians are keenly promoting

Truth, secularism, entertainment, infotainment,

History, Arts, sports and the Vedas

While some men are busily involved in tender-fixing rackets,

Political gamesmanship and corruption

Which announces their withering and redundancy.

The multi-faceted personality of women,

Their phenomenal talents, innovative and imaginative spirit

And their thoughtfulness and patience

With a crowd of cameras flashing on them

Is making of them enigma to their country people.

Surprisingly enough, many don’t like women

To hold key positions, however capable they are.

Interestingly enough, those women who are on the front track

Seriously pursue scaling the heights of excellence.

With stunning possibility that in years to come

Many more countries will place their entire confidence

In women as their leaders.

Look at the William sisters.

It’s their power and stamina,

Their pain and perseverance

That have made of them sporting icons.

Remember that this red and beautiful William blood

Runs in the veins of all responsible women.

A time will come when very few will be able

To match the prowess of women.

They will be the Godsend humanity is waiting for.

With vibrant, knowledge-infused thinking,

They are today’s beacon of hope

And tomorrow’s fulfilment.

Men and women can be equally good or bad in different situations. I see no logic in trying to rank one above another . Is the blood of any other human being less red and beautiful than of another ? I don’t believe so . And as Louis Kasatkin asks , obliquely , where is the poem in this political manifesto ?

Dear Amita, you have always left comments on most of my poems and this is very encouraging and beautiful. As far as this poem is concerned, I would like to break your comment in three parts so that i am clearer as to what i mean to say as a poet.
      1. I never stated that women are better or men worse. However, women are emerging from the patriarchal society and proving to all that they can bring many changes in the world.Think of past and present women leaders. They are more sensitive to social issues than most men as they live it everyday.
2.When I talked of the blood of William sisters I meant to say that the same blood runs in our veins as well, unless u think differently and i have no issues about it.
3.I think our friend Louis expressed his appreciation for this poem like he does for all my poems and places most of them as highly commendable.Read his comment carefully dear sister.Best wishes and thanks for reading and commenting.

    Dear Pramila Khadun ,
Thank you for responding so positively to the points I raised . However , though I understand that by saying that women are more sensitive than most men to social issues because they live them everyday , you do not mean to say that women are better than men or vice versa , I can only point out that men too live with serious social issues of say structural violence ,racial class and caste discrimination everyday . One cannot lose sight of this truth or deny its logic . Again , if you choose to see the comment made by the host of this site as pure admiration without bringing out the points of learning that can be of help in your writing in future , that is entirely your privilege . Thank you for bearing with me .
