The Truth-Teller

A Simple Translation of my own Urdu Ghazal

SAADIQ

The Truth Teller

( Dedicated to Raahat Indori Sahab )

He is not going to turn into Me
Nor am I going to turn into Him
Love brings us together
But does not turn us into One

Life brings us
Close to one another
But it does not in fact
Turn anyone into the other’s keeper or master

O you , who nurture the illusion
That you own all creation
Remember , you are creatures of Nature
Which is incapable of turning you into the Creator

O Human Beings ! It is we, humans ,
Who adapt ourselves to the seasons
The Wind does not change the weather
To fit in with our needs

Those who believe only in themselves
Have complaints to make about Fate
But for those who live in submission to the Divine Will
Fate never creates any difficulty

O ‘ Anjum ‘ ! You bright constellation of stars ! Keep your heart Pure at every moment
To those who are not pure of heart
Nature does not give the gift of Truthfulness

A Rhyming Translation

The Truth Teller

( Dedicated to Raahat Indori Sahab )

He won’t turn into I
I won’t turn into He
Together Love brings us , but
Discrete it lets us be

So also Life does bring
Us into proximity
But does not let me own you
Or let you own me

O you , who think you can
Of this world Master be !
You too are Nature’s creature
Whose Creator is He

Who adapts to the seasons ?
Why , us, who else but we ?
Winds do not turn the seasons
To suit us personally

The Self-Centred complain
Of quirks of Destiny
For those within His Will
There’s no difficulty

O ‘ Anjum ‘ keep your heart
Free of impurity
Or Nature will not gift
To you Veracity
