Middle Class Valentine Celebration

The special day it had to be,
But empty pockets and the rising costs,
The bejeweled watches or the importedbration flowers,
Were the gifts for ever lost.

A dinner at the poolside,
A dance and drink at the lounge,
Too distant a dream she shrugged.
She then slept with a smile, without any sound.

In the morning she woke him up,
Asked him to join the kids at the table.
The man disappointed felt a pang,
A love filled day of surprise will forever be just a fable.

What was waiting there was unexpected,
The table was not as empty as he thought.
A pleasant surprise, a smiling wife,
And the card, and what not.

A flower plucked from the garden,
Steaming cups for two, it was to be,
His favorite savories there to relish,
And lot of love stirred into the sugarless tea.
