The fear

The frightening imaginings of the mind

Do create feelings of fear

Like the three days of darkness,

An imminent third world war

Or simple things like

A repressed sexual passion,

An unfulfilled desire

And a kiss that was missed.

Fear spreads its tentacles all around—

Fear of rejection,

Fear of dejection,

Fear of injection,

Fear of the evil,

Fear of the devil,

And fear of the anvil

Of life.

Fear is here and fear is there.

Sometimes fear rattles

The door of our houses,

When floods of biblical proportion

Inexorably crosses the lands and buildings

Immersing them in muddy waters

And we know our home will not be spared

With the power of pouring flood waters.

At  other times, there is a creepy fear in our hearts

When the Met office issues a red weather warning—–

A volcano erupting,

Earthquakes having devastating effects

On lives and infrastructure,

Followed by a power outrage,

Homes being evacuated

With personal belongings strewn around

When at the same time, wild fires

Are expanding rapidly burning all on their way

Elsewhere in the world.

There is also fear of ties breaking,

Ties of friendship, deep camaraderie,

Bonds of love loosening, love disappearing

And lovers becoming strangers

Where once they sat nonchalantly

Under the umbrella pines

Looking at the myrtle shrubs,

Pink and white roses

And the soft carpets of violets,

While their looks tease each other,

Lips kissed each other,

Fingers intertwined and legs

Pressing each other

In a demarche of arousing passions

Affectionate and passionate.

This work draws the reader into ” Noir “,seemingly inexorable and yet as it approaches its conclusion ,a glimmer of remission is hinted at.

The Many Faces of Fear ! As F.D.Roosevelt once declared,in a different context:”the only thing we have to fear is fear itself .”A truly remarkable poem.
