The Cross

Most everyone has heard that Jesus died upon the cross
To cover us with His blood to atone for our sins
What a lot of them do not know is that He rose again.
He is more than just our savior, He is our living God.

He knew how He would die when He was just a kid
But that never stopped Him He knew it would make us sad.
I really hate to say that it makes me very glad,
That God was in charge of that.

That old cross must have been really heavy
Or was it the sins He carried that made it so
He carried it so long, long ago.
For you and me He died that horrible death.

He carried the burden of the world
Upon his slender shoulders
It must have felt like a sack full of boulders
Would we have helped had we been there?

The cross, the cross, the cruel cross
Why did they pick that way for him to die?
Because I think they were just living a lie
And they also knew they were wrong.

The cross was for the worst offenders
Which of course was not our Lord
They had no way to know He would be restored
And that would give us a chance to live eternally.

God is a loving God and the only one we have
He gave His son for our sins and raised Him up again
So each of us could go to Heaven, Amen
We have it so much better than they did long ago.

They had to live by the law of the land
We don’t have all those laws to live by
For us most no longer apply
We just have to have love and faith.

About Jan P

I was born and raised and still live in the great state of Oklahoma in the U.S.A. I live in Oklahoma City and have lived her for over 40 years. Came from a small town in eastern Oklahoma. I was raised on a farm as my daddy was a sharecropper. I worked for the Department of Defense for over 30 years. I am now retired and trying to catch up on all the things I didn't get to do when I worked. I have written poetry for many years, but only recently started writing more since I have found a place where others can enjoy reading it as much as I enjoy writing it.

” The Cross ” ,is a powerful and evocative piece as befits the poem’s subject matter. The style reminds me of the spoken song type of narrative which tends to make more of an impression when performed than when simply presented on the page. Without necessarily diminishing its impact the work would benefit from some judicious editing regarding its overall length
