Axis of meaning

The years and their memories ,
memories of the years
which we struggle to recall ,
grasping at inconsequential ephemera ,
a snapshot , a film , a record album ;
transcendent icons ambered in time ,
which we somehow put aside sometime ago ,
long ago discarded them along with
sundry detritus of the conventional ,
the ordinary everyday years erased
through inattention and indifference ;
We dream now only the dreams of memory ,
and we read only the fiction of the years
which we no longer struggle to recall ,
nor have need to grasp their ephemeral presence ;
we have consumed our own histories ,
fed on our own gore ,supped our own blood ,
we can no longer recall nor care to
the years and their memories ,
memories of the years
we lived .

    A bitter note from a master poet; about our indifference to history-“we have consumed our own history”- a line that is compelling & a clear dig at the ‘yuppies’ , seeming to be oblivious of the true import of the lessons learnt from our past.

    With your poems, I enjoy your subject matter as much as your delicious word choices. This is one to frame, but when I glance into it’s face upon each reread, my eyes cast downward in despair of its penetrating insight. I thus will give it the highest marks, and respect this hallowed ground where it presently resides, occasionally to come back to it for needed jolts of conviction.

    This one’s rhythm seemed rougher than your others, but perhaps that is due to the evocative thoughts you are dealing with.
