Rape Victims

The crude flesh from a womb
Grows into a beauty,
The beauty expands its realm
Of innocence and purity,
Vulture eyes stoop
To the nascent or tender life
For feeding on the helpless body
Of humanity and compassion
The blood-bath on the mother earth
Leaves only stigma and blots
On our conscientiousness
Never to be wiped off
From the humane faces
The inhumane hands remain stained
Till the hands are chopped off
To teach the nefarious, perverted minds
A severe lesson lifelong.

Nirbhayas, Nancies and Asifas
Must be murdered
As a punishment to be born
A mere helpless girl ?
Unprotected, all unsecured
In her own volatile turf :
Be it home, society, state or country
Until her society gives birth
To good and righteous people.

The time is ripe to impart ethics–
Value based education;
The doze of spirituality is a must
As it is sure to cure the perverted minds
And all social and mental ailments
Crude urges surging in hatred.
For parrying recurrent sexual assaults
On the fairer sex of the country
Why not moralize an immoral society?

Forlorn

Did I lose you somewhere
Between the hyacinth and the ribbons
The pleats and folds of my adult drape?

I know you still wait for me, my moon
As the night flutters, the unfailing rose
Drunk with solitude and honeyed longing.

I breathe shallow and deep, my eyes
Swept away by stardust, I am alone
Your milk, eager and firm, waits for me
At the shore of the night.

Between my trembling lips and voice,
Your song hides in the fugitive wind,
Slender and silent, you walk away,
Barefoot, soaking in the night’s last ashes.

Did I call you, my white hills
Breaking, sinking at the wake of dawn?
I return to the day, dust blown
Crushing sand beneath my feet,

You have sliced me to pieces,
I move, unsure, forlorn, in spirals
Of smoke as I call you out
My moorings trapped in the day, dying.

Essence of a Woman

What is the essence
Of being a woman?
I ask myself
Show the world
What caring and sharing is all about
My heart whispers to me
My brain says
Break the chain
That ties you
To something wrong
Cause that is not
Where you belong
Alongside not beside
The one slow
May love to follow
Share with ‘the one’
Care for ‘the one’
Not everyone
Father Husband and son
This game of life
Everybody has won
Because of you
Now it is your turn
To be a winner too

The Supernova

Markandeya Purana: “Durga came into being. The unique light, pervading the Three Worlds with its luster, combined into one, and became a female form”.

Let me be the Goddess in shining armor,

Let me be the surreal creative feminine force,

Let me regain my ten mighty arms, my fiery red clothes, my infinite power.

Bring me back my thunderbolt, my trident, my lion and lotus flower.

The cosmic rampage, the reign of terror is back,

Unleashed on earth. All forms of human–horrifying, grotesque,

Clenching, hungry–surround me, threaten me, mock my prowess.

A nemesis is here, an invisible cauldron, boiling along with

Black sins of human demons. Today, as the world invokes me

In temples and pandals, inside sacred places,

Let me creep inside the being of every woman,

Let me be the burst of elemental energy inside all of them,

Let me break my proverbial omnipotence, my impetuosity

Into thin slices, and bestow each one with a handful!

Within each of them, Durga, the unique light, the synthesis

Of beauty and power, would be dancing, rippling in waves,

Sputtering in myth and mystery. Amid the abysmal darkness

Of diminishing humanity, let me rise thus, from my ashes

And be the ‘Every Woman.’

( Footnote: This poem is my humble tribute to all my women friends around the world, on the auspicious occasion of Durga Puja, as I felt there is, and also there needs to be a Durga in all of us.)
