See the empty pages
staring,
staring back at you
staring as you stare
at them:
All those pages,
empty,void and
blank
waiting for a stroke
of your pen
the cut and thrust
of some intellect and
a little wit;
Scratches on the surface
of the Sun,
etchings on the landscape
of the Moon;
and still you stare at them
whilst they’re staring back
at you,
and you alone
hold the pen.
I feel there is a very strong message in ‘Staring Contest’. In spite of being enamoured of the beauty of Nature, like say, the rising or the setting of the sun, the moon or the dazzling stars…we still hesitate to pen down our appreciation… lovely poem to inspire us to write …
Many thanks for your most astute comments
I like how this poem connects Nature to the struggle to write a poem, or to write anything on the page. Very concise and clear.
The poet skilfully delineates a temporary writer’s block…in spite of sources for inspiration being present ,in the world around him. However,as Coleridge says in”Dejection: An Ode”: ”I may not hope from outward forms to win/ the passion and the life whose fountains are within.” Nissim Ezekiel was of the view: ”The best poets wait for words.”
Excellent play of words … emotions stirred to the brim…ink gushing out of pen now and flowing in all directions… thank you for sharing such a wonderful piece of poetry…
The binaries of the inner landscape paralleled with the outer, appeals to the senses as well the intellect, bringing out the pain of any writer in universal tones.
