                          Races

Running the races
we ran
when the blood
in our veins ran
red roaring ahead,
faster,
further,
farther
wth the Wind whipping
in our wake
as we ran the race
until its end;
ending,
ended,
entombed.

    Like the race it describes onomatopoeically , this succinct poem builds up its tempo through clever use of alliteration . A fine example of Pope’s dictum :
    “ ‘ Tis not enough no harshness gives offense :
    The sound must be an echo of the sense “
    There is also a play on the word “ race “ to be seen here
