Observe the Sons of Ulster Marching Towards the Somme*

sons of ulster *

( Battle of the Somme 1 July – 18 November 1916)

(first day)

The bombardment ceased –
Silence came,
Cordite filled the air;
Whistles! Shouted Orders!
Mixed in with silent prayers.
They scrambled across the cratered fields,
Believing the enemy had gone;
Observe the Sons of Ulster,
Marching towards the Somme.

But machine guns
Cut them down like wheat,
A scythe of deadly lead,
Tangled bodies in barbed wire
No Man’s Land, became the dead’s;
Some remembered Antrim’s fields,
And others Lambeg drums,
Observe the Sons of Ulster,
Marching towards the Somme.
