Journey to Haworth

Gritty
grimy
grey
grim day,
hacked
harrowed
hewn
from stone
and sky
and rain;
Here amid
the long days
in their long years,
longing
for some other days
for some other years
to pass them by,
and leave us here
in a familiar picture
framed by
the grit
the grime
the grey.

Alliterative, rhymed, onomatopic and meandering verse hewn and chiseled so perfectly and concisely to convey a layer of meanings.

Haworth , harrowed, hacked , and hewn from stone , on a gritty , grimy, grey and grim day , is naturally evocative of the materially austere though imaginatively rich early life of the famous highly creative Bronte siblings , and also of the unforgettable hero Emily Bronte’s novel , ‘ Wuthering Heights‘, the saturnine and mysterious Heathcliff .
